The Retreat

Hidden in the woods alongside fields

That flow into the distant hills,

We come to heal our hearts,

Refresh our souls, and clear the debris

From our brains; 'til we emerge

Into the fray once more, holding

The essence of the retreat within.

Within the garden of my heart

Throbs a lonely soul, watching

The budding blooms, the vibrant hues

While a dormant rock waits its turn

To fly.

How deep this plunge!

Swirling eternities of space

Seeking shards of memories

Long since disappeared

From minds

Existing only in the hearts

Of those prepared to search.

Necks craned, eyes wide and mouth agape,

We throw back the shutters to greet

They fade across the years

The glint of colours curling through my mind

The summer love and winter chills

While distant hopes lie sleeping in the hills.

Leaves flutter through the autumn air

Like dreams that die and come to rest.

And as they fly they tell, with sails unfurled

Of journeys made, of lives that changed the world.
