The Creek

You smile from your bed of rocks

Leaping through ancient lands

Where deer drink, bears fish

And soaring eagles cry with glee

To dive into your gurgling depths.

But what’s in your heart,

As you stir

In the distance – refuge, or a mirage?

Surely, glistening in the desert hills

A place of rest, of sustenance

That seems to shimmer from afar

While ever-present at my feet

Unknown wonders wait below.

                   The Nearest Thing To …

From here the distance calls.

Dark hills of mystery and shattered

light await. The silence looms inside my head,

invoking days of deepest dread,

until my gaze falls inward to that dream

where heaven lies within my soul.
